| The
program was to provide newsprint storage space, mailroom distribution
facilities for an existing metropolitan newspaper. The program included
a basement and two floors with the provision for future expansion to a
total of five floors above ground. Restrictions imposed by the site were
compounded since two different railroads had to be maintained during the
weight of the newsprint roll and the amount of stacking required a first
floor design live load of 500 lbs. per SF and second floor loading of
200 lbs. per SF were needed. In addition to the above referenced
restrictions, it was also necessary to insure alignment of floor grades
with corresponding floors in the existing building. Reinforced colored
concrete was chosen for the structural system. The exterior was formed
by 1 x 6 rough boards forms to give textured character to the structure’s
exterior.
