F. McAfee, FAIA, NOMA, PA was selected for design and prepare
construction documents for this project for Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
The program calls for a new place of worship for an expanding
congregation. The lower level of the church; containing offices,
classrooms, a kitchen, and multi-purpose room, serves as a visual base
for the glass sanctuary and chapel on the upper level. the separation of
ceremonial and functional spaces is achieved through the use of
materials and organization of spaces. The sanctuary and chapel are
filled with natural light which creates an open and expansive sense of
space that is dramatically inspirational. The concrete beams of the
sanctuary and chapel echo the shape of praying hands, elegantly
combining structure and symbolic meaning.
